SoCalGas announces a partnership with Doosan Mobility Innovation and GTI to launch a hydrogen drone demonstration

Advanced fuel cell drone services to deliver longer flight times with hydrogen refueling

LOS ANGELES, January 7, 2022 / PRNewswire / – Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) today joined Doosan Mobility Innovation (DMI) and GTI at the CES Summit in Las Vegas to announce their partnership in the launch of DMI’s first hydrogen drone technology. With support from SoCalGas and GTI, DMI will demonstrate its DS30 drone system, which delivers the best performance as a fuel cell power pack with up to 120 minutes of flight time and up to 11 pounds. maximum payload. Powered by hydrogen, the DS30 can monitor a mile-long pipeline in a single flight.

SoCalGas plans to use the DS30 drone to help with inspections of natural gas pipelines. The use of drones provides unprecedented aerial imagery and mapping services to further improve the maintenance of the pipeline system. The DS30 demonstration will provide close-up digital photographs for difficult or hazardous locations to access and will provide images for aerial mapping and three-dimensional topographic models that allow a better understanding of the terrain surrounding utility operations. In addition, the drone system can provide video recording of pipeline routes, construction sites, open trenches and working conditions.

“This hydrogen-powered drone provides the ability to more effectively monitor our pipelines in hard-to-reach areas, allowing us to collect more data to quickly resolve potential pipeline integrity issues,” said Neil Navin, vice president of clean energy innovations for SoCalGas. “This project is an excellent demonstration of the versatility of hydrogen and its wide range of applications as the clean fuel of the future. America’s safest and most innovative energy company. “

DMI, a market leader in hydrogen fuel cell drones, provides commercial drone platforms with fuel cell power supplies to maximize drone performance for inspection operations. Hydrogen fuel cell drones can stay in the air for up to two hours in the air, as fuel cells have an energy density that is about 4 to 5 times higher than lithium-ion batteries. On average, fuel cells have a lifespan of over 1000 hours and provide real-time product condition monitoring via DMI’s remote system.

This effort is part of a larger project focused on advancing hydrogen technologies. GTI and SoCalGas, working closely with several additional project partners, are working on a US Department of Energy project that intends to show that renewable hydrogen can be a cost effective fuel for multiple end applications, including drones, when combined with a large base load. consumers who use hydrogen for clean, reliable stationary energy.

“GTI is delighted to partner with SoCalGas and DMI for this demonstration of hydrogen in the rapidly growing application of drones,” said Ted barnes, R&D director at GTI. “Our role is to support the integration of hydrogen into new technologies and this partnership allows us to use our capabilities while working with leaders in the field.”

“Our partnership with SoCalGas and GTI means more than just a drone project. Our DS30 hydrogen powered drone is used to inspect the SoCalGas installation and serves as a perfect demonstration of how zero emission drones can be used, in particular over a long distance such as pipeline inspection, “said Doosoon Lee, CEO of DMI.” We continue to experience genuine 2 hour hydrogen powered flying drone system value for our customers. We hope that this partnership can represent one of its greatest values. “

DMI is the pioneer and creator of the world’s first commercialized hydrogen fuel cell system for drones and is used in a variety of industrial fields including utility inspection, delivery, environmental monitoring, and public safety. This year, DMI won a total of seven awards at CES in Las Vegas with two projects involving the DJ25 hydrogen fuel cell drone.

SoCalGas drone operations are managed in accordance with federal, state and local laws and regulations.

Last year, SoCalGas set a goal of achieving zero net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its operations and energy delivery by 2045. The company is the largest utility in distribution of natural gas in North America to have set an ambitious goal of net zero that includes the scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions. Learn more at
