MOSCOW, March 3 (Reuters) – Russian gas flows west through the Yamal-Europe pipeline to Germany from Poland fell sharply on Thursday, data from pipeline operator Gascade showed.

Russian energy supplies have been in the spotlight amid Kremlin tensions with the West and the invasion of Ukraine. Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a “special operation”.

Russian gas accounts for around 40% of the European gas market, while the Yamal – Europe pipeline typically accounts for around 15% of Russia’s gas supply to Europe and Turkey.

According to the data, gas supply fell to just 598,712 kilowatt hours per hour (kWh/h) on Thursday morning, from around 17.5 million kWh/h previously at the Mallnow metering point.

Data from operator Gascade also showed preliminary bids of 6.4 million kWh/h for the next 24 hours for westbound supplies, while bids for eastbound flows of 6.1 million kWh/h also remained.

The Interfax news agency reported that gas supplies to the west via road have been booked for March 3.
