Joint Working Group to Explore Blue Hydrogen Plants in Slovakia – Chemical Engineering

RWE Supply and Trading GmbH is collaborating with EP Infrastructure (EPIF), Eustream and NAFTA to jointly explore the potential development of state-of-the-art blue hydrogen production facilities in eastern Slovakia. To this end, the companies have now signed a memorandum of understanding. RWE Supply & Trading could source and import the hydrogen produced in Germany and other key RWE markets in Western Europe. The hydrogen could then be transported via a converted Eustream gas pipeline to Germany. The carbon dioxide captured during the production of hydrogen could be stored in depleted natural gas fields in Slovakia or in neighboring countries of Central and Eastern Europe, including Ukraine. The partners aim to help accelerate the rise of the hydrogen economy and make a significant contribution to European decarbonisation ambitions.

RWE Supply & Trading is the trading arm of the energy company RWE, one of the leaders in hydrogen development in Europe with a large number of promising green hydrogen projects across Europe. RWE Supply & Trading is looking for international opportunities to import green and low carbon hydrogen and its derivatives (e.g. ammonia) into Germany and other European markets to complement own production of green hydrogen by RWE.

Ulf Kerstin, CCO of RWE Supply & Trading GmbH: “We foresee a significant need for imports of low-carbon hydrogen into Germany in order to meet domestic demand as early as 2030. To potentially take off the low-carbon hydrogen from carbon produced in Slovakia and importing it to Germany via a reallocated pipeline infrastructure would meet this demand and at the same time support the establishment of the infrastructure required for future imports of green hydrogen from Europe to the east, including Ukraine.

EPIF, Eustream and NAFTA are the main infrastructure operators in the Central and Eastern Europe (CEEC) region. The two companies under the aegis of EPIF plan to become the main operators of hydrogen infrastructure.

“The EPIF companies operate important infrastructure for the international transport of hydrogen and storage. We are located between the planned production centers in the EEC, including Ukraine, and consumption in Germany and other Western European countries. Cooperation with RWE will allow us to jointly explore the opportunities essential for the success of the EU’s energy transition. Says Gary Mazzotti, CEO of EP Infrastructure.

“We recently announced our ambitions to prepare our network for hydrogen. By 2023, we aim to be technologically ready to accept mixtures of up to 5% hydrogen in our system and in the future we plan to dedicate one of our pipelines to the transmission of pure hydrogen. The cooperation with RWE in the field of blue hydrogen production in Slovakia is an exciting opportunity which aims to accelerate not only our ambitions, but also the deployment of hydrogen in the EU. says Rastislav Ňukovič, CEO of Eustream.

“The storage of hydrogen plays an essential role in the success of the hydrogen economy. Our long storage experience and our strategic location allow us to make a substantial contribution to cooperation in the field of hydrogen and CO2 storage. We believe that with our partners, we are able to find attractive development opportunities aimed at promoting the accelerated deployment of hydrogen. says Martin Bartošovič, CEO of NAFTA.

The companies create a joint working group, which will create a roadmap for the implementation of the project and engage in dialogues with the relevant stakeholders enabling the implementation of the project, especially in Ukraine, the Czech Republic and Austria In the coming months. All companies see the memorandum as an important step towards the development of their hydrogen-related activities.
