Germanys Habeck Says Nord Stream 2 Launch Would Mean Berlin’s Political Failure

BERLIN (UrduPoint News/Sputnik – Aug 22, 2022) German Economy and Climate Minister Robert Habeck of the Greens said on Sunday that the launch of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline would mean Berlin’s “political failure” and would “trample” Germany’s value system and position towards Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“In this case, I think a short-term benefit from the launch of Nord Stream 2, this gas and an opportunity to get through the winter better, will turn out to be a dramatic political failure,” Habeck said on the day. open house at the Chancellor’s office in Berlin.

On Friday, Bundestag Vice President Wolfgang Kubicki said Germany should immediately launch the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to ensure the country’s energy security.

However, German federal government deputy spokesman Wolfgang Buchner, commenting on gas cooperation with Russia, said resuming the Nord Stream 2 project was now out of discussion.

Nord Stream 2 is a gas pipeline project with a transport capacity of 55 billion cubic meters per year, allowing the transit of gas from Russia through the Baltic Sea to Germany. Construction of the pipeline took three years and was completed in 2021. However, in response to the special operation in Ukraine, Western countries imposed a series of sanctions on Russia, with Germany suspending Nord Stream certification 2 ready to run.
